The Watering Can is the first item the player obtains in the Zen Garden. It appears in Plants vs. Zombies and Plants vs. Zombies 2. It allows the player to water plants one at a time so that they will grow and become happy. It can be used for an unlimited number of times, and the player gets it by picking it up from the last zombie on Level 5-4, after which it will direct the player to the Zen Garden. Crazy Dave then teaches the player how to use it.

For $10,000, the player can upgrade it to the Golden Watering Can in order to water up to four plants at once. This upgrade is not available in the sequel. The water in the watering can apparently last forever in both games, as there is never any need to refill it for some reason. When the player waters a plant that wants to be watered, it drops a silver coin in Plants vs. Zombies. In the sequel, watering a plant will cause it to perform a special idle animation then reveal a time limit until it is next stage of growth. There is however, an algorithm to bypass the long wait.

The player can set their device's clock ahead to skip the long wait and boost plants more frequently. This method is the key to faster progression through the game. Keep in mind that you may mess this up and You could find yourself in some trouble.
