My suggestion for a new plant upgrade system.

Overview

I made this new upgrade system concept to create a potentially more balanced and strategic mechanic compared to the level-based system we currently have, which has spawned tons of unfairness in Battlez and for the zombies.

This is mostly inspired by the upgrade system of the Chinese PvZ2, which I find to be very unique and interesting. Upon reading the list of upgrades, you may find that some of them are directly from the aforementioned edition, like Ability Awaken and Swift Appearance. The difference between the upgrade system concept I made and the Chinese upgrade system is that the former isn't level-based, locked, and is customizable. Meanwhile, with the Int. and Chinese systems you are definitely keeping this Wasabi Whip at level 3 at all costs.

Customizing the upgrades of a plant is much like prepping your RPG character with proper armor and abilities before you enter the stage, though this time, it's obviously with plants. This is what I mean by a more "strategic mechanic". This would enforce less P2W and more strategy and decisions, much like the original PvZ. If you prefer an upgrade-less playstyle, you can deactivate any of these abilities any time (except when during a level, of course).

Obtaining upgrades

An upgrade can be obtained by purchasing them with seeds, whose purpose is now as currency instead of experience points. At the list of upgrades, you can see how much they cost. You may notice that the cost of the upgrade depends on how powerful it is. For example, Instantine costs a whopping 475 seeds, which might be worth the grind especially since you can, well, infinitely deploy Cherry Bombs.

Seeds would replace the normal reward of coins in Adventure mode and Endless Zone levels, and in turn, coins would be twice as abundant to make up. At most, you can get 50 seeds for up to 5 different plants when completing a level. If you think you don't get enough seeds by replaying levels, don't fret, as you can recycle your excess sprouts and Zen Garden plants for a pretty hefty amount. You can also convert certain seeds to other seeds, as long as the two plant seeds belong to the same Mint family.

Seeds are still normally obtained via pinatas so Pay2Winners can immediately get goddamn Instantine and Very Important Plant at the start of the game, and as usual, seeds for random plants are offered daily, except that seeds for 5 plants are now offered compared to 3. Also you get a total of 25 seeds instead of 20 per pinata.

These upgrades are purchased in a store badly named "Power Plants", as part of my "Shop overhauling" concept project.

List of upgrades

General

General upgrades do not apply to all plants, as some of these upgrades simply wouldn't work for them. For example, Jalapeno won't obviously get Grace Period, as a Jalapeno cannot be eaten or crushed.

  • Ability Awaken (325 seeds) - This plant has a chance to be boosted when planted, even without a Zen Boost
  • Invasive Species (100 seeds) - Recharges faster
  • Instantine (475 seeds) - This plant is instantly recharged
  • Discount (120 seeds) - Costs less sun (value subtracted differs from plant)
  • Very Important Plant (475 seeds) - This plant does not cost any sun
  • Rooted (100 seeds) - Cannot be moved
  • Perennial Paroxysm (380 seeds) - Does plant food ability twice
  • Grace Period (175 seeds) - This is immune to being crushed or eaten for a few seconds prior to being planted or plant-fed, depending on the toughness and recharge of the plant
  • Cell Wall (60 seeds) - 25% extra durability
  • Andrenaline Rush (150 seeds) - The primary functions of this plant are done faster
  • Extraction (150 seeds) - If the zombie is holding plant food and is attacked, immediately take it away
  • Wardrobe Warrior (350 seeds) - Get a stat boost when wearing a costume
  • Hybotany (300 seeds) - You can assign this plant into another plant family of your choice
  • Binding (150 seeds) - This plant's cost gets cheaper by 5 for each copy of it on the field
  • Demand (150 seeds) - This plant's recharge gets faster for each copy of it on the field, depending on the recharge speed of the plant
  • Antartic Adaptation (240 seeds) - Cannot be frozen.
  • Rage Mode (80 seeds) - When this kills a number of zombies, enter rage mode, which causes the plant to deal double damage for a few seconds

Peashooter

  • Gigantic Shots (80 seeds) - Chance to shoot a big pea that deals extra damage

  • Spread Shot (75 seeds) - A number of peas will be shot at random directions
  • Penetrating Pea (120 seeds) - There is a chance that each zombie this pea hits is penetrated
  • Bullet Capacity (200 seeds) - Shoot more peas when Plant food ability is activated
  • Bullet Velocity (75 seeds) - Peas travel faster across the lawn
  • Machine Gun (200 seeds) - Peas are continuously fired without delay
  • Evolution (200 seeds) - This turns into a Repeater if you plant another Peashooter on the same tile

Sunflower

  • Productivity (80 seeds) - Sun production interval is decreased

  • Radiant Bomb (150 seeds) - Produce extra sun when plant-fed
  • Solar Security (200 seeds) - Sun cannot be stolen
  • Ultraviolet (280 seeds) - Deploy sun bombs into the most dense pack of zombies when plant-fed
  • Swift Appearance (100 seeds) - Immediately produce sun when planted
  • Welcome Party (275 seeds) - All Sunflowers will produce sun when another one is planted
  • Evolution (300 seeds) - This turns into a Twin Sunflower if you plant another Sunflower on the same tile

Wall-nut

  • Roll Some Heads (150 seeds) - Rolls and bowls over zombies when completely eaten

  • Crystal Shell (280 seeds) - Gain crystal armor when Plant-fed
  • Nut Satellites (325 seeds) - Zombies near it get damaged by satellites. Each Wall-nut that is placed has a random configuration of satellites, each with unique effects.
  • Best Served Chilled (200 seeds) - Chill every zombie who completely consumed wall-nut
  • Grace Period II (280 seeds) - This is also immune to being moved around, stunning, frozen, and abducted for the first 15 seconds prior to being planted, plant-fed, or repaired
  • Metalmend (325 seeds) - When repaired, this gets boosted
  • Evolution (300 seeds) - This turns into a Tall-nut when you plant another Wall-nut on the same tile

Potato Mine

  • Tinkered Timer (75 seeds) - Arming time is decreased

  • French Fried (200 seeds) - Deals fire damage when it is still arming
  • The Invasive Spud (250 seeds) - Produces two more mines when plant-fed
  • Resurrect (300 seeds) - This has a chance to revive itself after exploding
  • Inperceptable (180 seeds) - Immediately explode after arming

Cabbage-pult

  • Hard Hitter (240 seeds) - Cabbages can stun zombies for a short amount of time (0.5-2 seconds)

  • Decapitator (250 seeds) - Small chance that a cabbage can instant-kill zombies
  • Smooth Pulting (180 seeds) - Cabbages are lobbed with lessened delay
  • Combo Cabbage (325 seeds) - A special kind of cabbage is launched, which repeatedly deals damage up to 10 times.

Bloomerang

  • Flank (150 seeds) - Throw boomerangs front and back

  • Capacity (200 seeds) - Boomerangs have a second attack cycle, now hitting zombies 4 times
  • Amputator (250 seeds) - Small chance that a zombie's arm will be detached, which deducts a massive amount of health
  • Thieving Trickery (180 seeds) - If the zombie is wielding a weapon, there is a chance that the boomerang may take it away
  • Spiral Galaxy (325 seeds) - When plant-fed, all boomerangs are fired in a spiral galaxy fashion.
  • Sonic Speed (80 seeds) - Boomerangs travel faster across the lawn

Iceberg Lettuce

  • Extra Lives (90 seeds) - Can freeze multiple times

  • Area of Effect (120 seeds) - Freezes the whole time
  • Winter Worry (200 seeds) - Zombies are permanently frozen.
  • Shiver Snow Shell (320 seeds) - When plant-fed, deal 5 damage to each zombie and freeze them for a longer time
  • Frostbitten (100 seeds) - Affects Frostbite Caves zombies
  • Snowball Fight (150 seeds) - Every few seconds, this shoots a Power Snow snowball

Grave Buster

  • Constriction Worker (75 seeds) - Nearby zombies are grabbed and are prevented from progressing

  • Jackpot (150 seeds) - Chance to get double the rewards from a busted tomb
  • Grave Crave (80 seeds) - Tombs are busted faster
  • Spud Surprise (210 seeds) - A Potato Mine explosion occurs after busting
  • Blockbuster (360 seeds) - A Primal Potato Mine explosion occurs after busting

Bonk Choy

  • Double Jab (100 seeds) - Attack from front and back silmuntaneously

  • Cover-Up (50 seeds) - Occassionally block off some zombie bites
  • Knockback (300 seeds) - After finishing plant-food ability, knock back all undefeated zombies
  • Overhand (200 seeds) - Chance that a zombie's head is decapitated
  • Stupefying Cross (175 seeds) - Punched zombies may be stunned
  • Ultra Uppercut (350 seeds) - Perform an uppercut when plant-fed, which straight up defeats a zombie

Repeater

  • Gigantic Shots (95 seeds) - Chance to shoot a big pea that deals extra damage

  • Machine Gun (220 seeds) - Peas are continuously fired without delay
  • Replanter (140 seeds) - Plant another Repeater in front of this Repeater, for free

Twin Sunflower

  • Productivity (80 seeds) - Sun production interval is decreased

Kernel-pult

  • Lingering (60 seeds) - Butter stuns for a longer time

  • Butter Barrage (300 seeds) - More butter is launched when plant-fed
  • Acid Butter (250 seeds) - Butter is toxic, draining small amounts of health overtime
  • Frozen Butter (200 seeds) - Butter can chill, along with stunning
  • Stocked on Butter (120 seeds) - Increased chance that butter is lobbed

Snapdragon

  • Flamethrower (200 seeds) - Extended reach

  • Aerial Apparatus (240 seeds) - Floats above ground
  • The Untamed (325 seeds) - When plant-fed, this attacks random tiles with fire. Burnt tiles severely damage zombies and plants.
  • Firecharge (80 seeds) - This attacks with a fireball, which deals more damage, but lesser splash
  • Torchwood's Godsend (350 seeds) - Fire after being plant-fed lasts longer. This continues to deal damage and can also ignite peas.
  • Warm and Cozy (70 seeds) - Thaws nearby plants
  • Melting Point (180 seeds) - Instantly melts frozen plants and zombies

Spikeweed

  • Prickle Enhancement (150 seeds) - This deals quadruple the damage to zombies

  • Dangerous Directions (280 seeds) - You can link multiple spikeweeds together to form a walking path for zombies. If the path starts in a certain lane and a zombie appears in that lane, it will always follow the spikeweed path.
  • Sticky Substance (100 seeds) - Zombies that step here are slowed
  • Penetration (260 seeds) - Ignores armor
  • Commensalism (125 seeds) - You can plant on a spikeweed, causing the plant to fuse with the spikeweed
  • Attempt Two (250 seeds) - Send zombies back to the beginning after being plant-fed
  • Thalassic (80 seeds) - This survives being submerged underwater, continuing to deal damage as usual

Spring Bean

  • Blasting Off Again (275 seeds) - If the zombie is not a machine or a Gargantuar, launch this zombie off to the sky

  • Forces of Beheading (400 seeds) - When plant-fed, remove the heads of zombies instead of bouncing them.
  • Busy Schedule (100 seeds) - Sleeps faster
  • Sleep Shell (75 seeds) - This receives more toughness when sleeping
  • Goalie (100 seeds) - This prevents imps from being launched past your defenses, instead, they are springed back to the Gargantuar

Coconut Cannon

  • Knockback (300 seeds) - Cannonballs knock back zombies, regardless whether this is plant-fed or not

  • Cannon Capacity (240 seeds) - Chance to fire two cannonballs instead of one
  • Automatics (180 seeds) - You can set a Coconut Cannon to fire automatically

  • Rush Hour (95 seeds) - Reload time is decreased by 6 seconds
  • Tridirectional (175 seeds) - This can attack in the lanes above and below
  • Knock Unconscious (220 seeds) - Stun all zombies hit by the cannonball

Threepeater

  • Gigantic Shots (90 seeds) - The middle head has a 50% chance to shoot a big pea

  • Practical (275 seeds) - This shoots a mass of peas in the lanes here, above, and below instead of all over the lawn when plant-fed
  • Double Strike (100 seeds) - Shoots two peas at once
  • Element Troika (250 seeds) - Top head shoots frozen peas, bottom head shoots fire peas.

Spikerock

  • Prickle Enhancement (275 seeds) - This deals quadruple the damage to zombies

  • Magmatic Substance (195 seeds) - Synergizes with fire plants by deploying damage faster when there is a nearby fire plant
  • Endurance (80 seeds) - This can withstand more smashes
  • Thalassic (80 seeds) - This survives being submerged underwater, continuing to deal damage as usual

Cherry Bomb

  • Atomic Split (125 seeds) - The explosion deals 33% more damage

  • Picture Cherry (250 seeds) - After exploding, make two individual cherries in two random tiles. These act like weaker Potato Mines
  • Tactical Nuke (400 seeds) - Explosion range is increased to 5x5
  • Double Detonation (350 seeds) - Explodes two times, but a single explosion deals 33% less damage
  • Erratic Explosion (350 seeds) - Explodes onto 9 random tiles instead of a 3x3 area

Split Pea

  • Gigantic Shots (90 seeds) - The middle head has a 50% chance to shoot a big pea
