Tigerstool (虎头菇; pinyin: hǔtóugū) is a melee plant introduced in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2. It is able to roar at zombies within a 2x3 area ahead of it, stunning them. After the target is stunned it will brandish a rapid swiping claw attack that deals heavy damage. Zombies are unstunned after being attacked by Tigerstool's claws.

Origins

Tigerstool is based on the Hericium erinaceus mushroom, a member of the Hericium genus of mushrooms which are known colloquially as "Monkey's head mushrooms" and "lion's mane mushrooms" due to the fruiting bodies of the fungus typically being covered in soft drooping spines that resemble hair or fur.

Tigerstool is also based on a tiger (Panthera tigris) a species of big cat native to southwest and central Asia known for being one of the largest and strongest species of cat currently living. Tigerstool's tiger theming is tied to the Chinese zodiac designating the year it was released, 2022, as the Year of the Tiger.

Tigerstool's Chinese name, "虎头菇"; lit. "Tiger Head Mushroom", is a pun on the Chinese name for the mushroom it's based on, "猴头菇"; lit. "Monkey Head Mushroom", due to the similar pronunciations of "猴" (hóu) and "虎" (hǔ). It's English name is a play on the word "toadstool", a term which is used to refer to mushrooms.
