Tiger Grass is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 first introduced in the 9.4.1 update. They create a grass tiger that leaps out and claws the first zombie that approaches the fourth tile in front of it (dealing 3x damage one time), which will then jump back into Tiger Grass once the zombie is defeated. Tiger Grass will need 6 seconds to create another grass tiger if one is defeated. Over time, the grass tiger within Tiger Grass will grow, dealing 1.75x damage and gaining 1.75x health.

Origins

Thysanolaena latifolia and Panthera tigris

Tiger Grass is based on the plant of the same name (Thysanolaena latifolia), the only species of the genus Thysanolaena, which is the only genus in the tribe Thysanolaeneae in the grass family; as well as a tiger (Panthera tigris), the largest living cat species and a member of the genus Panthera.

Their name is a play on the tiger grass' name, being a tall patch of grass that houses tigers.

Plant Food effect

Tiger Grass' Plant Food effect, named Ultimate Tiger in the almanac, spawns a fully grown grass tiger which deals a large amount of damage to the first zombie it encounters. Similar to Cactus, Plant Food cannot be given again to a Tiger Grass that has already been given one.

Enforce-mint effect

When boosted by Enforce-mint, Tiger Grass's grass tigers deal an additional 130 damage, and its ultimate tigers deal an additional 397 damage.

Strategies

Just like Turkey-pult, Tiger Grass serves as a perfect counter against any zombie that has some kind of countermeasure against certain plants, such as: Jester Zombie, as he will stop to eat the tiger rather than reflect it back due to the grass tiger being able to stop just inches from the jester and claw him to pieces; MC Zom-B, who will also stop to eat the tiger rather than swing his microphone during his jam; Excavator Zombie, who will stop to hit the grass tiger with his shovel; and Explorer Zombie and veteran counterpart, both of whom will be incapable of continuing to advance with a grass tiger blocking the way. However, the regeneration of a new tiger takes a while, and so you will need to stack multiple tigers to significantly stop zombies. This means it cannot fully deal with a Gargantuar by itself.

Tiger Grass also works well with slowing/stun plants such as Snow Pea and Sap-fling, as they make the zombies deal less or no damage against the tiger while frozen, stunned or slowed. Planting defensive plants such as Wall-nut in front of it or Pumpkin on top of it is also recommended. As long as the Tiger Grass is not destroyed, it will keep spawning grass tigers. This also solves the problem of its long regeneration while the zombies are attacking the defensive plants. Combining it with Gumnut can also be very helpful.

Trivia

• Tiger Grass, Shadow Peashooter and Boom Balloon Flower are the only non-Plants vs. Zombies 3 plants that have officially named Plant Food effects.
• Their Seed packet texture is an image of the grass tiger, rather than the actual grass from which the tiger leaps.
• Not counting Snap Pea, Tiger Grass has the longest melee attack distance in the Enforce-mint family of plants.
• In the notifications, Tiger Grass is referred to with female pronouns.
• Tiger Grass has the same triggering range as Fume-shroom.
• If Tiger Grass is planted on a Minecart, after the grass tiger leaps out of the grass, the cart can be pulled to a different lane before the tiger can retreat to it, resulting in the grass tiger flying towards the house.
