Sun-Shroom's Plants vs. Zombies Heroes description

Sun-shroom

Sun-shroom is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. He is a mushroom counterpart to Sunflower, being cheaper and producing sun, while growing in size depending on how long he's been on-screen, producing more sun in the process.

Sun-shroom could be considered the posterchild for mushroom plants in the series much like how Sunflower is used to represent the plants; this is best exemplified in him being used in the icons for two mushroom based achievements Good Morning and No Fungus Among Us, as well as him being used more in official merchandise than the other flagship mushroom plant Puff-shroom.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Sun-shroom has appeared in four games.

Origins

Pholiota aurivella

Although it is never stated outright which exact mushroom Sun-shroom is based on, the mushroom he most resembles is the Pholiota aurivella, also known as the Golden Scalycap, due to his brown-spotted bright yellow cap.

His name is a portmanteau of "sun" referring to the fact that he is a sun-producing plant and "mushroom," the type of plant he is based on.

Sun-shroom's dislike for sun may be based on how mushrooms in real life prefer growing in dark locations that have very little natural light.

History

Plants vs. Zombies

Sun-shroom1

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games, Sun-shroom is unlocked after beating Level 2-1. He is a mushroom alternative to Sunflower, being 25 sun cheaper and initially producing fewer sun. He is meant to be used in Night and Fog levels due to his cheaper cost and sleeps in the day unless waken up by a Coffee Bean.

He produces 15 sun every 24 seconds until two minutes have passed, in which he will then grow and produce 25 sun every 24 seconds instead.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Sun-shroom2

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Sun-shroom is once again unlocked by beating the first level of the first night world, in this case, Dark Ages - Night 1. Like the first game, he costs 25 sun and grows in stages, this time having three and producing small, normal, and finally big sun.

He produces 25 sun every 34 seconds, then grows to producing 50 sun every 34 seconds after 18 seconds and finally grows to producing 75 sun every 34 seconds after 72 seconds.

He is a member of the Enlighten-mint family, letting him grow to his biggest stage in only two seconds and producing sun every 4 seconds. His Plant Food instantly grows him to his biggest stage and gives 225 sun.

Sun-shroom makes a minor appearance in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as an auxiliary plant. His sole purpose is to be defeated in events for the player to collect sun.

Sun-ShroomH

Sun-shroom's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as an Event card. He costs 2SunPvZH, has 2HeartPvZH and Team-Up and is a mushroom in the PvZH Solar IconSolar class. Like Sunflower, if he survives, he will give the Plant Hero +1SunPvZH. However, after this, he will transform into Sunnier-Shroom.

Sunnier-ShroomH

Sunnier-Shroom has the same traits and tribes as Sun-Shroom, but costs 3SunPvZH to plant already in that form and has 3HeartPvZH rather than 2. He will also give the Plant Hero +2SunPvZH at the start of each turn rather than just 1SunPvZH. Sunnier-Shroom used to be an Token card only obtainable through Sun-Shroom, but he was later was added to the Triassic Triumph set as an Uncommon card.

Trivia

  • His design looks like, and may be a reference to, the Super Mushroom or Toad from the Super Mario series. It could be a reference to the fact that mushrooms in the Mario series make the character grow, while the Sun-shroom grows by himself.
  • Although he does not appear in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, an image of him can be seen on the Stickerbook's model. This is also true with Garlic and Gloom-shroom.
