Red Boy Imp was based on the zombie in Plants vs. Zombies: Journey to the West with the same name and appearance.
Its description was a reference to the fact that its Journey to the West counterpart could shoot fireballs, while it couldn't.
The fact that it was first seen in Journey to the West references the fact that it was based on a zombie from the game with the same name .
