- For the version in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, see Primal Peashooter.
Primal Peashooter is the first plant obtained in Jurassic Marsh in Plants vs. Zombies 2. He is the primal version of Peashooter. Every 2.85 - 3 seconds, he shoots a rock-like pea that stuns a zombie for 0.5 seconds and has a 50% chance to knock it back by 1 tile. Each rock pea does 50 damage to zombies (at Level 1). The zombies immune to his knockback capability are Jurassic Bully and Jurassic Rockpuncher. Due to his knockback effect, stunned zombies that are knocked back will no longer be immobilized.
In the Chinese version, each rock pea does 70 damage instead, at level 1.
Origins[]

He is based on his modern counterpart, Peashooter, who in turn is based on the Pea plant (Pisum sativum).

Primal Peashooter |
Primal Peashooters shoot heavy peas with a brief stun and occasional knockback at zombies. Primal Peashooter may be primitive, but that doesn't stop him from enrolling and excelling in several software development correspondence courses. |
Chinese version (China only)[]

Upgrades[]
Plant Food effect[]
When fed Plant Food, Primal Peashooter gains Stegosaurus-like plates on its head and will shoot five rock peas that look identical to his regular ones. However, these rock peas deal 100 damage and push back all zombies located on them. If Primal Peashooter is Level 10 or above, his rock peas can do splash damage as well in an area of a tile.

Appease-mint effect[]
When boosted by Appease-mint, Primal Peashooter's damage is increased by 120 damage.

Costumed (China only)[]
After shooting five rock peas, he will now shoot an additional giant lava ball that leaves a fire trail similar to Dragonfruit's costumed Plant Food ability.
Strategies[]
Primal Peashooter is a powerful plant for taking out single zombies, regardless of their health, as the knockback prevents them from getting too far. However, his slow firing rate makes him vulnerable to zombies in groups and allows the zombies to advance easily, especially if the player does not deploy a large number of Primal Peashooters on the lawn. Think of this as a Peashooter with extra damage, and a knockback effect as well as a stun effect, but at the cost of 75 more sun and a slower firing rate.
Primal Peashooter shouldn't be paired with Celery Stalker, Stunion, or any lobbed-shot plants with exception of any that deals splash damage, since it is possible that the peas will knock back the zombies and make Celery Stalker vulnerable, the stun effect from Stunion will be undone, and the lobbed projectiles are more likely to miss their targets. Primal Peashooters works well with area of effect plants like Fume-shroom, Phat Beet, and Snapdragon, since the knock-back effect is effective in clustering crowds of zombies. It synergises particularly well with Winter Melon, since the Winter Melon's chilling effect makes Primal Peashooter's knockback even more significant (slowed zombies will take longer to make up lost ground), which further improves clustering (ie any zombies who get ahead of the pack will be knocked back in line with the others so Winter Melon can hit them all at once). Primal Peashooters also work well with Bowling Bulbs. While Bowling Bulbs can crowd control groups of zombies, Primal Peashooters can hold back stronger zombies in low numbers, preventing them from destroying both of these plants.
Primal Peashooter may be a risky pick on levels with the “Don’t let the zombies trample the flowers” objective, due to the knock back knocking zombies back if they’ve been launched over the flower. On the other hand, his Plant Food power can be very effective in pushing zombies away from the flower line if they haven't reached the line yet. Take caution when using it.
Primal Peashooter's knockback effect can be paired with Blover to instantly defeat most zombies, as the zombies are considered airborne momentarily while being knocked back. Although, the player may need to plant a few columns of him to execute this strategy reliably, in addition to having a steady supply of sun to support the spamming of Blovers. To improve the effectiveness of this strategy, the player can also pair him with plants that can deal with large amounts of weaker zombies such as Winter Melon and Laser Bean, opening up the way for his peas to affect tougher zombies. Note that this strategy does not work against zombies that can nullify his projectiles, such as Jester Zombies, or zombies that are immune to knockback, such as Jurassic Bullies. Also, Hurrikale cannot be used for this strategy, as he can only blow away zombies that are naturally airborne, and not the ones that are made 'technically airborne.'
Primal Peashooter's Plant Food effect deals little damage and is inferior to even that of the Fume-shroom in terms of pushing back the hordes. However, as with the knockback effect from his normal projectiles, the player can also exploit this knockback effect from his Plant Food projectiles with Blover to eliminate most zombies in his lane. This can be done most easily when Primal Peashooter is boosted.
Like most other peashooting plants, Primal Peashooter can be combined with Torchwood to deal more damage to the zombies. Additionally, as he is also an Appease-mint family plant, he can also be paired with Pea Vine and/or Appease-mint to boost his damage output. His stunning and knockback abilities will remain unaffected, however.
In Ancient Egypt, Primal Peashooter is useful for stopping sandstorms because his projectile can immediately end this attack, forcing the zombie to come out of the storm. Primal Peashooter is a good choice against Explorer Zombie as they can keep them out of range to prevent them from tearing through plants. They work great against Pharaoh Zombies as they can stall them as their sarcophagus gets destroyed.
In Pirate Seas, Primal Peashooter is useful for combating zombies in water lanes. Swashbuckler Zombie and Imp Pirate Zombies can be pushed back into the water if they are airborne. However, sometimes this will not kill them due to the glitch where they will walk on water. This is especially useful in the new levels that came to Pirate Seas in the new update. Barrel Roller Zombie's barrel can be pushed back by the knockback effect, causing the zombie to lose its grip and walk on without it, so the barrel does not become a potential threat. In the later extension levels, Primal Peashooters are excellent choices for stalling Barrelhead Zombie and Pelican Zombie.
In Wild West, Primal Peashooter can prevent Chicken Wrangler Zombies from releasing the chickens with his stunning ability. Although, it may be a better idea to support him with plants that can deal with swarms reliably, as the Chicken Wrangler Zombies will still release the chickens if they are damaged by mostly anything other than the Primal Peashooters' peas, potentially overwhelming your defense.
In Frostbite Caves, Primal Peashooters can stop snowstorms similar to Ancient Egypt. They can also force any Dodo Rider Zombies onto the ground with their knockback effect and prevent them from bypassing defenses. In addition, they can push back dangerous zombies such as Blockhead Zombie so that they do not overwhelm defenses. Primal Peashooters are also useful in lanes where zombies have been redirected to by ice floes so they can repel them. He can also deal with Weasel Hoarders in the same way he deals with Chicken Wrangler Zombies. Be aware of Hunter Zombies and Troglobites, as these two zombies can create icy obstacles to block Primal Peashooters' projectiles, thereby diminishing his effectiveness.
In Neon Mixtape Tour, Primal Peashooter is effective against most zombies encountered in this world as their knock back can easily disable most of their abilities. They can repel Punk Zombies as a defense to prevent them from pushing other plants. Knocking back Glitter Zombies allows the exposed zombies to be vulnerable to attacks. They can knock back MC Zom-B and prevent them from coming near enough to destroy the plants. Zombies kicked by Breakdancer Zombies can be repelled away easily. Primal Peashooter can also prevent Boombox Zombies from reaching the column that they will stun plants.
In early Jurassic Marsh levels, Primal Peashooters work very well against raptors as zombies can be repelled easily when kicked forward. When stegosaurus appears, Primal Peashooters can knock zombies back before they reach its tail. Primal Peashooter's knock back can also disable pterodactyl's ability.
In Modern Day, the Primal Peashooter can knock away zombies that come from portals making them less of a threat. They can also push back Super-Fan Imps to have them incinerate plants that aren't important assuming the player has put their most valuable plants in the back. Combined with slowing plants, they can push back Newspaper Zombies to allow more time to set up defenses.
In Penny's Pursuit, he is useful for completing objectives that require the player to stun zombies a large number of times. Additionally, due to the inflated toughness of zombies in this mode, it may be viable in certain levels to use him with Blover to instantly defeat the zombies when they're knocked back, as opposed to defeating them through sheer damage.
However, Primal Peashooter still has many weaknesses:
- In later levels of Ancient Egypt, the massive amount of tombstones present will prove to be a challenge to Primal Peashooters. The presence of Tomb Raiser Zombies also pose a major threat when they come in uncontrollable quantities.
- In Wild West, Pianist Zombies can make him miss his targets.
- In certain levels of Far Future, Shield Zombies pose a major threat, as their shield can protect very dangerous zombies, against which Primal Peashooter's abilities are ineffective. Using E.M.Peach could ease the situation, though not for long, so Imitater would be recommended.
- In Dark Ages, avoid using Primal Peashooter, as Tombstones will get in the way, as well as the sheer amount of Jester Zombies that are present. Wizard Zombies are especially dangerous due to their constant plant-disabling ability. Also, Necromancy ambush can easily overwhelm Primal Peashooter.
- In Lost City, there are many obstructions. Excavator Zombie will not be damaged by Primal Peashooter damage though it will still be pushed/stunned. In addition, Lost Pilot Zombies, Bug Zombies, and Relic Hunter Zombies can advance into the lawn quickly with their abilities, and can protect more dangerous zombies like Turquoise Skull Zombie. Imp Porter is especially dangerous once his tent is set up, as the constant supply of zombies (especially Buckethead variants), can make it extremely hard to get rid of the tent without support.
- In some levels of Neon Mixtape Tour, Arcade Zombies are very dangerous, especially if they appear in large numbers. Its arcade machine can shield all of its projectiles from dangerous zombies. In addition, the spawning of 8-Bit Zombies are also an issue, especially if the machine spawns many Buckethead variants in a row. Plants like Bowling Bulb or any area of effect plants should be used alongside Primal Peashooter. Hair Metal Gargantuars are also a threat, during his metal jam, as they randomly create shockwaves that can easily take out Primal Peashooter, despite that Primal Peashooter can keep him away far enough from crushing your back defenses.
- In the later parts of Jurassic Marsh, avoid using Primal Peashooter. Jurassic Bully now counters this. Jurassic Bully will take its shots (with the stun effect still working), but end up shielding other zombies. Not to mention, Jurassic Bully can sustain many blows. Furthermore, T. Rexes are a huge hazard, as neither the stun effect nor the knockback effect will remove the zombies' speed boost from T. Rexes, especially if this type of dinosaur or zombies arrive in groups. Ankylosaurus will sometimes fling zombies in large numbers towards the Primal Peashooter which they cannot repel when airborne. Due to his vulnerability against zombies in large numbers (especially Jurassic Fossilhead), Primal Peashooter is not very good at defending later in Jurassic Marsh.
- In Modern Day, Primal Peashooter will only be useful in some levels. Some levels contain early ambushes, something Primal Peashooter may not be able to contain quickly. In addition, the previously mentioned zombies can also appear, so take caution when selecting plants.
- Due to his single-targeting nature, coupled with his weaknesses to some dangerous zombies in every world, he is a poor choice as a main offensive plant in later levels of all Endless Zones.

Trivia[]
- If a rock pea hits a Pianist Zombie, the music he plays will restart, regardless of knockback or stun.
- Lost Pilot Zombie can get pushed back by him, even when dangling in the air. However, he will not fall to the ground after getting pushed back, until after a few seconds or if Blover is used.
- Although his projectile is different than other peashooting plants, they reuse existing sprites from flaming peas if they pass through Torchwood, although all other effects are kept.
- His knockback can disable stun effects.
- Prior to the Power Plants update, the rock peas fired would rotate in midair.
- His stun effect was removed in the 6.9.1 update, but came back in the 7.2.1 update.
- In the Chinese version, his rock pea can't be deflected by Jester Zombies.
- His rock pea can't be lighted up by Match Flower.
- He is the only Appease-mint family plant whose peas can make the zombies be affected by Blover (which means his peas and Blover can become an effective combo) and which can only be found in Adventure Mode.
- He is also one of the few world plants who can synergize with Blover.
- Primal Peashooter's stun can actually freeze and thus prolong the death animations of the Zombots. This is most apparent in Modern Day - Day 34 due to the low difficulty of the stage but can also be seen in Jurassic Marsh - Day 32.
