Onion Rings may seem to have lower stats than usual for 5 sun, but its ability could change the tides of the battle, turning every plant card's stats into 4strength/4health while still keeping their sun costs, which can make them very cost-effective. Keep in mind that this ability only affects plant cards that are currently in your hand. So to take advantage of this ability well, bring certain cards like Flourish to draw more cards as the more plant cards you have in your hand, the more plants you can turn into 4strength/4health. |
+ |
Onion Rings represents a loss of board presence with a poor statline of 4strength/4health at 5sun, but the ability can potentially cause a large tempo swing if the buff hits enough targets. Getting a large hand to gain maximum value can be done with reactive play similar to a control deck or by drawing with cards like Flourish. |

As Onion Rings turns all your cards into 4strength/4health, that comes with the deckbuilding restriction of making cards with high stats such as The Great Zucchini or Kernel Corn less effective. To make the best use of the effect, cards with low stats for their cost should be built in. |
− |
This also means that it benefits low-stat cards. For example, Captain Combustible can use it with a mushroom deck consisting of Shrooms for Two, Buff-Shrooms, Mushroom Ringleaders, Punish-Shrooms, and Astro-Shrooms. Once he has lots of these cards, he can put Onion Rings into play and give them a head start. |

Mega-Grow has a few cards that work decently with the buff such as Bonk Choy, Sweet Pea, Grow-Shroom, Clique Peas due to the naturally low stats of the class. |
− |
Onion Rings also has great synergy with Bean Counter, which can be played on the curve and can also draw you two Weenie Beanies, who will become 1-sun 4strength/4health plants. However, only Green Shadow can normally perform this combo. |

Chompzilla has Lil' Buddy which becomes a 0sun 4strength/4health with team up, letting you take the game back by force even in the same turn as playing Onion Rings. Ketchup Mechanic also represents a great card for controlling normally and becomes huge with the buff that stacks with its effect. Cosmic Flower is a powerful synergy as it is a great target itself but also keeps up your hand size with conjures, most of which range from great to neutral with the Onion Rings Buff. Magnifying Grass and Elderberry are both great glass cannons that become more threatening with the buff and can be used with Plant Food or Sun Strike to deal damage to the opponent. |
− |
Stat changes from Onion Rings' ability persist for the rest of the game, even if the affected plant is Bounced. |

Grass Knuckles can run a more aggressive Onion Rings deck with access to many great early game cards that double as good buff targets such as Galacta-Cactus, Jugger-Nut. Pear Cub gets a huge boost as it becomes a threat on its own but has a second layer of threat, presenting a difficult to remove target which also can be in the water lane. Hot Date is a decent control tool and represents 7 damage when trading while also being a good counter to amphibious cards such as Toxic Waste Imp and Ducky Tube Zombie. Access to Spikeweed Sector helps punish using small bodies to block your attacks, counters zombie environments, and is great to play around to generate board presence. |
− |
Though its ability is useful, take note that this plant limits your choices on other plants due to it actually lowering the stats of the more offensively powerful cards. Any cards whose strength and health are both over 4 are better off not to be used with Onion Rings, the only exception being Grapes of Wrath, who will be able to activate its ability easier. Another exceptional example of a plant that goes badly with it is Reincarnation, as you will have to play it that turn or the stat boost will be lost. As for plants with one stat below 4 but the other over 4 such as Threepeater, they are able to synergize with it nicely as long as the loss isn't too great. |

Green Shadow has access to many beans which are already small, allowing the normally small threats to do extra damage while survive most boardclears such as The Chickening and Fireworks Zombie. The Admiral Navy Bean + Planet of the Grapes combo helps keep a large hand. She also has Starfruit which is extremely powerful as a 4strength/4health representing a massive board wipe and can do lots of damage to the zombie hero. Tricorn and Threepeater are able to do large amounts of damage with a stat shift towards the offensive. Be sure to note that Snapdragon and Dark Matter Dragonfruit do not change splash damage with the buff. |

Captain Combustible has access to numerous swarm cards which are amazing with a 4strength/4health statline, such as Shroom for Two, Banana Launcher which doubles as infinite removal and a great target, and Puff-Shroom which is a 0sun 4strength/4health with team up. Re-Peat Moss is available to all the heroes, but he is the best at using him with the buff. Moss works great with the stored buff as it lets the damage stack up more quickly. |

A good deck needs to balance cards that are great with the Onion Rings buff while still doing acceptably without the buff, with trade offs of weakness to aggressive strategies and less value making many lesser used cards such as Sage Sage worth considering. |

Onion Rings relies on a deck being built around the buff to be effective, and the cards that gain value are often poor for building a board. Going on the offensive will force the opponent to choose between losing buff value or taking a lot of damage. Keep in mind that any cards buffed by Onion Rings will keep buffs after being bounced, so be careful of giving them free value. Cards such as Regifting Zombie can potentially speed up their gameplan of getting cards to buff, but if you are on the offense it often can be the way to win. |
− |
There is no way to stop this card, but the only solution to avoid a lot of plants from turning 4strength/4health is to lure your opponent into playing a lot of cards. Try swarming the field or playing glass cannons to make the plant hero think twice between taking a lot of damage and wasting cards. Avoid Bouncing this card because the plant hero is going to play it again and gain benefits of it, unless for lethal damage. Be careful about playing cards that give your opponent cards as well such as Regifting Zombie, Wormhole Gatekeeper, or Unexpected Gifts, as Onion Rings can boost more of your opponent's plants to 4strength/4health. |

Onion Rings is a galactic legendary plant card in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes and a member of the Mega-Grow class. It costs 5 to play, and has 4/4. It does not have any traits, and its ability changes the stats of all plant fighters in the plant hero's hand to 4/4 when it is played.
Origins
It is based on the onion (Allium cepa), specifically the red onion; and a planet with rings, for example, Saturn.
Its name is a literal pun on "onion rings," a snack that consists of cross-sectional "rings" of onion covered in batter which are then deep-fried. However, Onion Rings has raw onion rings orbiting around it instead.
Its description is a reference to how onions in real life cause eye irritation and uncontrollable tears when cut normally due to a chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide.
