Night Cap is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.

They are always depicted as a ninja mushroom and is typically given shadow based abilities and attacks, usually piercing shadow projectiles, the ability to vanish instantaneously, and the ability to cloak ally plants.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Night Cap has appeared in four games.

Origins[]

Night Cap's name is a pun on "nightcap," a type of headwear used during sleep, referring to how mushrooms are nocturnal in the original Plants vs. Zombies game, and "cap," a common name given to the mushroom pileus.

History[]

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes[]

Nightcap's first appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as one of the playable Hero plants introduced in the game. He leads the Kabloom and Smarty tribes. His Signature Superpower is Mush-Boom, with More Spore, Whirlwind, and Storm Front being his secondary superpowers.

Nightcap's strong suit is fast tempo, hyper-aggressive decks. benefiting from the low cost mushroom and bean fighters the Kabloom and Smarty tribes provide and cards that synergize well with both plant families, such as Punish-Shroom and Admiral Navy Bean, or plants that benefit from numerous cheap cards being played, such as Astro-Shroom and Pineclone.

Nightcap is one of two Plant heroes to not be a hero version of a pre-existing plant or a pre-existing plant on their own, the second being Beta-Carrotina, rather he is based on mushroom plants as a whole.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville[]

Night Cap reappears in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville as a new playable plant class. She is an PvZ BfN Attack Class Icon Attack class who specializes in stealth attacks. Her primary weapon, Spore Strike, is able to pierce multiple zombies in a wide area.

Night Cap can also preform various shadow ninjutsu techniques for her abilities, such as Casting Shadows which allows her to summon a large shadow dome that cloaks plants and restricts the movement of zombies caught in it, Fung Fu which is a rapid barrage of attacks which quickly takes down swarms of lower health Zombies, and Shadow Sneak which temporarily turns Night Cap invisible allowing her to sneak up on zombies or evade zombie attacks.

Night Cap also has the ability to double jump and has the highest amount of mobility of any class in the game. She, like all classes, has a large number of character upgrades, some of which grant abilities and perks to Night Cap's primary weapon and abilities.

Plants vs. Zombies 3[]

Night Cap's also reappears in Plants vs. Zombies 3, as her first appearance in a main-line tower-defense game. Her design resembles her Battle for Neighborville appearance, with her scar referencing her Heroes appearance.

She is a 7 cost Rare Shooter plant, and she fires piercing projectiles similar to her Battle for Neighborville appearance. However she fires them far slower than previous iterations, needing to recharge after each projectile fired. Shadow projectiles deal an immense amount of damage to zombies in order to compensate for Night Cap's slower firing speed.

Her Plant Food ability is named Fung-Fu and allows her to deal heavy damage to five random zombies on the lawn. Her Tacobility effect is named Casting Shadows and allows her projectiles to pierce more zombies at a time, as well as Stealthing plants adjacent to her, preventing them from being damaged by zombie attacks. Both abilities are based on, and named after, two of her abilities in Battle for Neighborville.

Plants vs. Zombies 2[]

Nightcap2

Nightcap's latest reappearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a premium plant added in the 10.8.1 update. Nightcap now sports an updated design which is an even blend of her designs in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.

She functions similarly to her Plants vs. Zombies 3 appearance, firing projectiles down her lane that pierce through multiple targets. But unlike her Plants vs. Zombies 3 counterpart, her projectiles attack a four tile range ahead of her all at once much like Fume-shroom, and the projectiles she fires deal poisonous damage to zombies, gradually chipping down zombies' health while ignoring armor.

She also has the additional ability of entering a stealth mode when zombies get too close to her, which works similarly to plants like Cactus and Shadow Peashooter who hide underground when zombies get to close to them. Nightcap is immune to a majority of zombie attacks while also being able to deal continuous poisonous damage to any zombie that walks on her tile while she's in stealth mode.
