Not many people know this, but Lily Pad absolutely loves square dancing. There he is, a circular plant gliding across the dance floor making squares.

Origins

He is based on the lily pad, which are the leaves of the Nymphaeaceae plant family, which consists of flowering water plants, also known as water lilies.

His ability to have plants being planted on him may be based on the popular image of small aquatic animals such as frogs and toads resting on top of lily pads.

Lily Pad's slightly altered appearance in Plants vs. Zombies 2 is based on the Queen Victoria's Water Lily (Victoria amazonica), the largest water lily on earth, due to the newly added rim around the edge of his body.

His costume is a reference to the flowers of the real life plant he is based on, which turn from white to pink when they get pollinated.

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Lily Pad is the first Pool plant obtained. Lily Pad is essential to the Pool and Fog levels, as they are the only way to bring non Aquatic plants into the aquatic lanes.

He has an upgrade, Cattail, which fires homing spikes at enemies, but cannot support plants. It will target the zombie closest to the house, prioritizing flying Balloon Zombies first.

Lily Pad returns in the sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a plant exclusive to Big Wave Beach. Just like the first game, he is used to plant non aquatic plants on the water, but this time, he can also be planted on wet sand, in which while non aquatic plants can be also planted on it, this wet sand is usually overtaken by the tide, making him essential to plants on the sand.

Oddly, unlike most plants, Lily Pad only has a chance to give back sun when shoveled up by the upgraded Shovel. This is likely because certain Lily Pads are pre-planted and to prevent easy sun grinding from these pre-planted Lily Pads and their Plant Food effect creating four free Lily Pads.

Lily Pad appeared in a cameo role in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. He was simply an auxiliary plant who held other plants on top of him during PvP levels.

Cattail returned in this game, but not as an upgrade to Lily Pad, but rather as her own plant in her own evolution line. This could ironically lead to Cattail and her evolutions being on top of a Lily Pad.

Lily Pad's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as the Triassic Rare Leafy plant of the PvZH Smarty IconSmarty class. He cost 1SunPvZH, has 1HeartPvZH, and is a Leafy card with the Amphibious treat.

Like the main series games, he can have a plant be placed on top of him via Evolution in which the plant on top of him will gain the Amphibious trait and will also Conjure another Leafy card.
