Kernel Corn is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Kernel Corns are similar to Foot Soldiers, using a fully automatic weapon and having a ZPG-like weapon in the Shuck Shot.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Kernel Corn has appeared in three games.

Origins

Like plants such as Kernel-pult and Cob Cannon, Kernel Corn is based off an ear of corn. His abilities are even related to corn, with Butter Barrage and Butter Beacon being based off the common topping for corn, Husk Hop referencing the husk of a corn and Shuck Shot referencing the task of shucking a corn.

The "Kernel" part of his name is a pun on the military rank "Colonel," because Kernel Corn is in the plant military, as well as the fact that the seeds on corn are called kernels.

History

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Kernel Corn first appears in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 as one of the four new playable classes. Unlike Rose and Citron, who are both time travelers, Kernel Corn simply arrived from overseas to take back Suburbia. He plays similar to the Foot Soldier, using a similar weapon to the zombie and having a ZPG-like projectile.

As with the other playable classes in the Garden Warfare series, he has numerous Character variants based on him, each having their own traits which differentiates them from the standard base character.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Kernel Corn next appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as one of the two Kabloom Legendary plants in the Premium set. He costs 8, has 6/6 health, is in the Corn tribe and their ability deals 4 damage to every zombie on the board, similar to Sour Grapes.

Due to their classes, Kernel Corn ironically can't be used by Rose or Citron, the two characters he was originally introduced with.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Kernel Corn's latest appearance is in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. He is an Attack class who specializes in ranged attacks. Like most classes in the game, Kernel Corn's abilities have been altered, his Shuck Shot closer resembling the alternate ability Multi-Shuck and his Butter Barrage his been replaced by Butter Beacon, an ability that lets Kernel Corn and his allies see the location of any zombie hit by the attack for a limited time and in Kernel Corn's case, deal more damage to them.

Unlike in the Garden Warfare series, Kernel Corn no longer has any Character variants, but instead has a large number of character upgrades, some of which grant abilities to Kernel Corn's primary weapon and abilities.

Trivia

The fact that he fires projectiles from his "arms" seems to reference a concept idea from the original Garden Warfare that deceits plants attacking using their arms rather than their mouths and heads.
