Ice-shroom is a returning mushroom plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 11.0.1 update alongside Bud'uh Boom. Ice-shroom was introduced as part of the "Ice-shroom" Arena season.

Due to Ice Bloom reusing Ice-shroom's original ability of freezing every zombie on the lawn, Ice-shroom has received a very heavy rework, now being a chilling melee plant (attack interval is 1.5 seconds, chills zombies for 2 seconds) that creates an ice aura in a 3x3 area around himself that boosts surrounding Winter-mint plants and chills zombies that walk in it. Ice-shroom is immune to Frostbite Caves' freezing winds.

Origins

Ice-shroom is based on the plant from Plants vs. Zombies with the same name and appearance.

His attack being changed to a short ranged attack might be a reference to his Garden Warfare appearances.

Plant Food effect

When given Plant Food, Ice-shroom will launch four icicles into the air, which will target four random zombies on the lawn, freezing them for 3 seconds. The number of icicles fired will be increased by leveling up Ice-shroom.

Winter-mint effect

When boosted by Winter-mint, Ice-shroom will deal an additional 100/200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900/1000 damage with its normal attack, it will deal an additional 350/375/400/425/475/550/625/700/775/900 damage with its Plant Food projectiles attack, the number of projectiles it lobs during Plant Food is increased by 2, and its damage boost is increased by 0.25.

Strategies

The ability for Ice-shroom to give a good boost to Winter-Mint plants makes him function more like Moonflower. It's highly recommended to utilize this boost by spreading out Ice-shrooms throughout the field. However, most of his viability comes from supporting the same family plants. Outside of support, he can be an OK staller with his aura being able to slow zombies, or he can be a decent melee attacker that can control crowds.

When using him, it's important to note that your selection becomes limited to mostly Winter-Mint family plants as the only attackers for your defense, mainly because his damage boost is high and the Winter-Mint family plants are most likely to out damage any other of your plants when boosted. It's also good to note that this heavily limits to what a free player can bring if the only premium plant they have unlocked is Ice-shroom. However, Ice-shroom can play the leading role on its own.

His offensive capabilities are strong enough to be compared to super melee plants like Headbutter Lettuce. He functions as a melee plant when he attacks, and his attacks are AOE and can hit multiple zombies at a time. But He cannot self-boost, if you do want to make his offensive capabilities reach very high potential, just upgrade him to level 2 which increases his range. Planting a Reinforce-mint family plant or Buttercup in front of it is also a good way.

Ice-shroom makes an 3x3 icy aura that boosts the Winter-mint family except Winter-mint and himself. The icy aura also chills Zombies. Ice-shroom has 550 HP, plus its slowing ability, it becomes a high damage output meat shield warrior. Also, if you have 1 lane of Ice-shroom, it can kill a Gargantuar easily. The icy aura chill for every Zombies even airbone zombies like Zcorp HelpDesk. It also works for Zombies carried by an Pterodactyl and flying zombies get chilled too. And like every Winter-mint family, it extinguishes Explorer Zombie, Torchlight Zombie, and Firebreather Zombie. Be careful too, because Octo Zombie still can trap Ice-shroom and disable the icy aura, and yeah Wizard Zombie, Roman Caesar Zombie can trap Ice-shroom too. Ice-shroom Plant Food become one of the best counter for Chicken Wrangler Zombie, and Turkey Wrangler Zombie without releasing with any critters. But not for Weasel Hoarder. Roman Caesar Zombie, Cardio Zombie, and Zomboss, but still damage the Zombie. It also chills submerged Snorkel Zombies.

Trivia

• Ice-shroom is the first plant returning from the original Plants vs. Zombies to behave completely different than he did in the first game, both in abilities and functions. In the first game, he is an instant-use plant that freezes all zombies on the lawn while in the second game, he is a melee plant that chills all zombies in a 3x3 area and boosts Winter-mint plants surrounding him.
  • Ice-shroom is the second plant returning from the the original Plants vs. Zombies to become a survival plant instead of being an instant-use plant, with first being Explode-O-Nut (Note that the Explode-O-Nut in the original Plants vs. Zombies only appeared in Wall-nut Bowling mini games and indirectly became instant-use plant to do bowling).
• Ice-shroom's almanac entry is a nod to his radically revamped abilities between games.
• Despite mentioning in Ice-shroom's almanac entry that his chilling aura buffs Winter-mint plants in his radius, Ice-shroom currently can not boost his own or other Ice-shroom's damage in his area. This may be a bug or an intended feature to address Ice-shroom's commonly pointed out insanely high damage stat.
• Unlike the first game, he now has a "Mediocre" recharge.
