โHypno-shroom's Plants vs. Zombies 2 Almanac description |
- For other uses, see Hypno-shroom (disambiguation).

Hypno-shroom is a recurring plant character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Hypno-shrooms mess with zombies' minds, usually mind controlling them to work for the plants, but are also capable of messing with their vision and overall movement.
He appears to be one of the few plants to be sympathetic towards zombie enemies, asserting that they do not actively mean to do harm, but rather are misguided in their actions and aims to "bring them around to our way of thinking" through means of parasitism.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Hypno-shroom has appeared in five games.
Origins[]
Hypno-shroom doesn't seem to be based on any specific mushroom but rather he is based on the concept of hallucinogenic mushrooms as a whole, such as Psilocybin mushrooms used for recreational drugs, possibly specifically the flying saucer (Psilocybe azurescens), also known as the blue angel or azure psilocybin mushroom, due to the cap's shape as well as possibly its shininess; as well as Cordyceps, fungi that can control animals (typically insects).
His bright colors and the visuals of his attacks in the shooter series are likely based on the visual effects of psilocybin mushrooms and other psychoactive drugs. His name refers to how it hypnotizes zombies into fighting for the player, and how he is a mushroom.
History[]
Plants vs. Zombies[]
- Main article: Hypno-shroom (PvZ)

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as Chinese spin-off games based on it, Hypno-shroom is the fifth plant unlocked in the Night segment of the game. Costing 75 sun, he hypnotizes the first zombie that eats it, making them fight for the plants instead.
Being nocturnal, Hypno-shroom can't use his ability during the Day, Pool, or Roof levels unless awakened by a Coffee Bean. He also has an achievement related to him, Disco is Undead (formerly known as Thrilling the Zombies) which requires Hypno-shroom to hypnotize a Dancing Zombie.
Oddly, while most zombies that are hypnotized by Hypno-shroom can use their abilities on zombies instead, ZomBotany zombies such as Peashooter Zombie will still damage plants with their ability.
Plants vs. Zombies 2[]
- Main article: Hypno-shroom (PvZ2)

Hypno-shroom makes a reappearance in Plants vs. Zombies 2, this time as a Gem premium plant. His ability is the same as the previous game, but is no longer nocturnal due to there only being one night world in the game, at the cost of costing 125 sun instead of 75, though he does cost 75 sun in the Chinese version of the game.
He is a member of the Enchant-mint family and his Plant Food effect transforms the hypnotized zombie that eats him into the Gargantuar of that world. In the Chinese version, the zombie will instead be transformed into the Buckethead Zombie variant if he doesn't have his costume.
Zombie Chickens and Ice Weasels can eat Hypno-shrooms and be hypnotized without entirely devouring them, letting him hypnotize multiple of these zombies at once.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville[]
- Main article: Hypno-shroom (Spawnable)

Hypno-shrooms appear in both Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville as a Spawnable plant. He can fire pulses at zombies and when he gets close enough, he can leech onto them, disrupting the affected zombie's vision and movement.

Hypno-shrooms are commonly used as the minions to a huge threat to the zombie team, the Royal Hypno-Flower in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Blight Cap in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.
There is also a Battle Leader in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville named Lucy, she is a Champion Hypno-Shroom who can turn invincible for 3 seconds every 3 seconds.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)[]
- Main article: Charm line

Hypno-shroom's latest appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Charm line. He evolved from Beauty-shroom and evolves into Talisman-shroom and attacks by blowing charm bubbles.
His active ability is Silent Charm, which gives a chance to silent 3 random enemies for 3 turns, not allowing them to use their abilities while his passive ability is Grave Silence, which gives them a 40% chance to silence the one that kills them for 5 turns.
His soulmates are members of the Boomerang line for a health boost, members of the Electric Grass line for a damage boost, and members of the Stump line and Hazelnut lines together for a boost to his critical hit chance.

Trivia[]
- Oddly enough, a multitude of Zombies, despite being hypnotized, can still harm the player's defense.
- These zombies include Jalapeno Zombie, Troglobite, Turquoise Skull Zombie and Healer Zombie, the latter who can even heal themselves out of being hypnotized.
- Although, he doesn't appear as a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 3, he appears as a chew toy for Twister.
- Although the ability to turn a zombie into an ally through hypnosis is effective, it also has some distinct drawbacks:
- When a zombie is hypnotized, it retains the same health it had before hypnosis. In Plants vs. Zombies2, this does not apply to mechanical zombies such as the Zombie Bull, whose energy is completely replenished during hypnosis, but with other zombies this could lead to an already very weakened ally who is quickly eaten by the other zombies without being able to be of much use to the player.
- Some hypnotized zombies like Wizard Zombie cannot use their special abilities against enemy zombies, which can severely limit their benefits to the player. In the worst case, as mentioned above, some hypnotized zombies can still deal damage to the player's defense with their abilities.
- A zombie already deals 100 damage with a single bite, more than many plants, which means that even a hypnotized zombie with a high defense can be easily defeated by a larger horde of enemy zombies.
