In Plants vs. Zombies 2, there are some game modes. Most of the modes are similar to the first game, with minor tweaks.

Time Adventure

Main article: Adventure Mode (PvZ2)

After finishing tutorial levels of the game, the player goes to the first world, Ancient Egypt to defeat zombies. Then, the player can travel to other areas, such as Pirate Seas and Wild West. The player can also unlock other mini-games and Endless Zones.

Brain Busters

Main article: Brain Busters

Like Plants vs. Zombies mini-games, Brain Busters are levels in special condition. Special Delivery, Locked and Loaded, Save Our Seeds, and Last Stand are available in all areas. Each area has a Brain Buster(s) which is exclusive to it, other than Frostbite Caves, Lost City, Neon Mixtape Tour, and Jurassic Marsh. Unlike mini-games in the first game, Brain Busters are part of the regular progression through the game's story.

Endless Zone

Main article: Endless Zone

After a certain level of each area, the player unlocks an endless level. The levels are Pyramid of Doom, Dead Man's Booty, Big Bad Butte, Icebound Battleground, Temple of Bloom, Terror from Tomorrow, Arthur's Challenge, Greatest Hits, La Brainsa Tarpits, Tiki Torch-er, and Highway to the Danger Room.

Piñata Party

Main article: Piñata Party

Every day, a Piñata Party will appear. Piñata Parties take place on the front yard or other Time Periods, and feature zombies and plants from all areas. They are normally conveyor-belt levels, but some special parties will be Locked and Loaded levels.

Main article: Vasebreaker (PvZ2)

Vasebreaker is a game mode added in the 2.7.1 update. Gameplay is similar to the original Vasebreaker. There are three power-ups exclusive to this game mode, which is separate from all other levels. There are currently 13 levels, one of which is an endless Vasebreaker zone. Other levels are separated into 4 packs: Vasebreaker Intro, Egyptian Challenge Pack, Pirate Challenge Pack, and Western Challenge Pack, which take place on Player's House, Ancient Egypt, Pirate Seas, and Wild West respectively.

Zen Garden

Main article: Zen Garden (PvZ2)

The Zen Garden is a virtual garden where the player keeps plants that he or she has collected. By watering and growing plants, players can earn coins and free boosts for their plants. The growing periods can be shortened and more plant pots can be added to the garden with gems. Also, Bernie the Bee also accompanies the player in the garden, shortening the desired plants' growing process.

Main article: Arena

Arena is a game mode added in the 6.6.1 update. The mode allows competition between players. Contestants plan their own team to get the scores by defeating zombies in time. If the zombie is killed further from the house, the player will get higher scores. The more the player wins, the more rewards they receive.
