Doom-shroom is a returning mushroom plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 11.7.1 update. Unlike the first game, it can only explode if being destroyed.

It grows in three stages, whose explosive ability becomes stronger over time. It takes it 8 seconds to grow from small to medium, and 12 seconds to grow from medium to big.

The initial stage deals 1100 damage to zombies in a 3x3 area, the medium stage deals 1400 damage to zombies, also in a 3x3 area, spawning an initial stage Doom-shroom around the area, and the last stage deals 2200 damage to zombies in a 5x5 area, spawning an initial stage Doom-shroom.

Regardless of which stage, the explosion will leave a crater that cannot be planted on, lasting for 13.5 seconds.

Origins

Doom-shroom is based on the plant from Plants vs. Zombies with the same name and appearance.

Plant Food effect

When given Plant Food, all Doom-shrooms on the lawn will grow a stage, and then explode and spawn additional Doom-shrooms.

Bombard-mint effect

When boosted by Bombard-mint, Doom-shroom only takes 2+4 seconds to grow to its full size, it will deal an additional 250 damage (increases by 100 damage for each level) with its stage one attack, an additional 300 damage (increases by 100 damage for each level) with its stage two attack, and an additional 400 damage (increases by 150 damage for each level) with its stage three attack.

Strategies

Doom-shroom is a powerful plant considering it's rather cheap cost and it's ability to spawn new clones of itself upon exploding. However, this also brings a disadvantage - planting too many Doom-shrooms at once may eventually overwhelm the lawn as they leave behind craters which can't be planted on. A good strategy to counter this is to cover the lawn in Lily Pads, as they cannot be destroyed by Doom-shroom and therefore do not leave a crater. Other plants that can create grid items are also able to counter Doom-shroom's craters, such as Tile Turnip and Gold Leaf, though they are way less effective due to their high cost and sluggish recharge respectively.

Don't plant vines over Doom-shroom, as he needs to take damage to explode, making it obsolete.

It is recommended to not use your Plant Food on a Doom-shroom, as all your Doom-shrooms will explode, which is rarely ever useful in most scenarios. One fully grown Doom-shroom is enough to take care of a large crowd of zombies, so exploding multiple of them and filling your lawn with baby clones isn't necessary.

Otherwise, Doom-shroom is a mostly strategy-free plant, as it's simple and straight-forward ability allows it to pair well as a support plant to any strategy.

Trivia

• Unlike the first game, it now grows into three stages (similar to the Sun-shroom, Strawburst, and Ultomato) and explodes once destroyed on each stage rather than being an instant-use plant.
  • Doom-shroom is also the third plant returning from the first game to become a survival plant instead of being an instant-use plant, with first being Explode-O-Nut and the second being the Ice-shroom.
• Unlike the first game, its sun cost was increased by 50 sun and has a faster recharge.
• Unlike the first game, the crater now lasts for 13.5 seconds rather than 3 minutes.
  • The crater is also very similar to the scorched tiles created by the Zombot Dark Dragon after launching fireballs to hatch Imp Dragon Zombies or Jurassic Rockpuncher after destroying a plant.
  • Imp Dragon Zombies are also immuned to Doom-shroom's explosion.
• With its return, this would technically make all Night plants return to Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • Also, coinciding with this, all Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare mushrooms (except the Goop-shroom) appear in both Plants vs. Zombies and Plants vs. Zombies 2.
• It, Sea-shroom, Scaredy-shroom, Puff-shroom, and Sweetheart Snare are the only plants that initiate a chain reaction of Plant Food.
  • Coincidentally, most of them are Mushrooms and first appeared in the first game.

• Unlike the first game, Doom-shroom does not destroy a Lily Pad or Pumpkin on the same tile with it, nor will it create a crater in such cases.
  • It does not destroy any plant on the same tile with it and it will not create a crater if there is a plant or grid item (only excluding Arena score tile, the extended part of Pirate Seas plank, and Minecart) on the same tile with it.

• In beta versions, it was originally going to cost 250 sun or 275 sun. Doom-shroom would explode even if being attacked just one time, having a damage delay after the explosion. It used to spawn 2 Doom-shrooms on its final stage explosion too. The crater lasted for 8 seconds or 10 seconds.
• The "DOOM!!" onomatopoeia only appears on its final stage' explosion. Its onomatopoeia is also very similar to Boom Balloon Flower's Plant Food explosion.
• It appears slightly larger on its final stage than he did in the first game.
• It and Dragon Bruit are the only plants in the game to create copies of themselves when destroyed as of the 11.7.1 update.
• A fully grown level 10 Doom-shroom does enough damage to instantly defeat an undamaged Jurassic Gargantuar because it does 175 more damage than the Jurassic Gargantuar’s total health of 5,400 making the Doom-shroom the first plant in the game able to do this.
• Doom-shroom's animation in the Zen Garden has a visual glitch: when you water it, it will shrink to its initial size before resizing back to the default.
• Doom-shroom is one of the few plants that destroys itself when fed with Plant Food, the others being Bzzz Button and Ultomato.
  • However, Marigold also self-destructs when given Plant Food, but can only be seen if obtained illegally.
