It is based on the real meaning of coffee grounds, the waste product after brewing coffee.
It being an environment may be a visual pun on the word "grounds," as Coffee Grounds is literally a ground lane with coffee beans.
Its ability may be a reference to one of the many uses of coffee grounds: compost or mulch.

Strategies
With
This environment is really cheap for a plant to attack twice in addition to benefiting plants that rely on Bonus Attacks. This works really well on plants with decent strength and health to do more damage to the zombie or zombie hero. It also works well with heavy-hitting plants like Super-Phat Beets, where they can deal a ton of damage in that lane to any zombie and/or the zombie hero quickly.
Having Party Thyme can allow an extra card draw every turn as long as the plant in this environment attacks. Using plants with Team-Up such as Shroom for Two and Pair of Pears is a good idea as both plants will do bonus attacks. When combining two plants in Coffee Grounds with Party Thyme, two cards will be drawn instead of one.
As Green Shadow, combining Coffee Grounds with Template:PvZHLink or Shooting Starfruit will result in multiple attacks in multiple lanes, doing lots of damage to either the zombies in those lanes or the zombie hero. Also, since this is a bean environment, she can use Admiral Navy Bean to activate its ability. When playing as Chompzilla, combining this with Strikethrough plants will allow for double damage to both the zombie hero and the zombie in front of it.
As Captain Combustible, Invasive Species is a good plant to use on this environment, as it will have Double Strike and +3 strength, making it very lethal, and even possible for the game to end in your favor.
Avoid using this environment on plants that already has Double Strike such as Template:PvZHLink, Bananasaurus Rex, or Cosmic Pea as it makes the environment worthless other than destroying zombie environments. In fact, this environment is worthless if Bonus Track Buckethead is on board, so be aware against Hearty heroes.
Against
If you see a plant with high strength in that environment, replace that environment with one of yours or remove that plant as soon as possible. Otherwise, the zombie hero will end up taking too much damage and the plant hero can turn in a favor to boost that plant, ending the game quickly. Alternatively, you can play Bonus Track Buckethead to make this environment useless.
