As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Coffee Bean has appeared in 3 games.
It is usually drank in the morning, and it is used to make the drinker active and awake, just like the mushrooms in the game, who wake up during daytime after using Coffee Bean.

Coffee Bean next appears solely in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, unlocked after beating Night 13 of the Dark Ages. In this game, due to mushrooms being awake by default, Coffee Bean serves as a counter to the Archmage Zombie, who puts plants to sleep.
Coffee Bean's range has also increased to a 3x3 area and slightly increases the attack of all plants in that range when used.

Coffee Bean's latest appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the first plant in the Coffee Line, evolving into Latte Bean and then Mocha Bean, all three attacked by firing more coffee beans at zombies and specialized in increasing the damage and speed of their teammates.
Coffee Bean's ability was Excitement, which increased the attack and speed of all plants for two turns.
Coffee Bean was originally going to have wings, but this was scrapped. Oddly enough, the All Stars design was made before a Plants vs. Zombies 2 design was made, but Plants vs. Zombies 2 ended up with the wing design while All Stars ended up with a wingless design.
