Coffee-bean

Coffee Bean is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Coffee Bean is a instant-use plant that are used to wake up other plants.

In Plants vs. Zombies, Coffee Bean is the only way mushrooms can be used in daytime levels, as otherwise they will fall asleep and not use their abilities.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Coffee Bean has appeared in 3 games.

Origins

Roasted coffee beans

Coffee Bean is based on the real coffee bean fruit from the coffee tree, Coffea arabica. It is a perennial plant cultivated to make various coffee drinks containing caffeine.

It is usually drank in the morning, and it is used to make the drinker active and awake, just like the mushrooms in the game, who wake up during daytime after using Coffee Bean.

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Coffee Bean is the fourth Roof plant obtained.

They costs 75 sun and wake up any mushroom up, effectively making them cost 75 more sun in the day. In Versus Mode, Coffee Bean is only 25 sun for unknown reasons.

Multiple pieces of promotional media have Coffee Bean with wings, despite not having any in-game. This is later used as a basis for their design in their next game appearance.

Coffee Bean next appears solely in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, unlocked after beating Night 13 of the Dark Ages. In this game, due to mushrooms being awake by default, they serve as a counter to the Archmage Zombie, who puts plants to sleep.

Coffee Bean's range has also increased to a 3x3 area and slightly increases the attack of all plants in that range when used.

Coffee Bean's latest appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the first plant in the Coffee Line, evolving into Latte Bean and then Mocha Bean. They attacked by firing more coffee beans at zombies and specialized in increasing the damage and speed of their teammates.

Their ability was Excitement, which increased the attack and speed of all plants for two turns.

Their soulmates were members of the Sunflower line for a health boost and members of either the Tree line or members of the Chrysanthemum line and Corn lines together for a damage boost.

They originally were going to have wings, but this was scrapped. Oddly enough, the All Stars design was made before a Plants vs. Zombies 2 design was made, but Plants vs. Zombies 2 ended up with the wing design while All Stars ended up with a wingless design.
