Bud'uh Boom is a premium plant added in the 11.0 update of Plants vs. Zombies 2 alongside Ice-shroom, as part of his own dedicated Arena season.

Bud'uh Boom is an instant use plant that explodes, leaving stunning butter tiles in a 3x3 area and heavily damaging zombies. His explosion will also fling multiple butter projectiles onto random tiles on the lawn, which also leave stunning butter puddles.

His butter puddles last for 10 seconds, stun zombies for 5 seconds, and cannot be created on ocean tiles in Pirate Seas, on the water in Big Wave Beach, or the tiles covered with shallow puddles, pothole puddles, sap puddles (from Sap-fling), oil puddles (from Olive Pit), slippery ice (from Zomboni), poison (from Goo Peashooter), lava puddles (from Lava Guava), molten pools (from Meteor Flower), and goo puddles (from Cran Jelly).

Origins

Bud'uh Boom is based on a Haworthia, specifically the Haworthia cooperi species. His name is a portmaneau "bud'uh" (butter) and Bada-Boom, a popular phrase. His name could also be a pun of "bud", a small pointed lump that appears on a plant, however, he is not actually a bud as he is a succulent leaf.

Bombard-mint effect

When boosted by Bombard-mint, Bud'uh Boom's explosion damage is increased to 1300 (level 1), 1600 (level 2-3), 2000 (level 4-5), 2300 (level 6-8), 3000 (level 9), 4000 (level 10) damage, it will fling an additional 1 buttered projectile, and its projectiles (also the grid items it leaves) deal an additional 5 (level 1-6) or 10 (level 7-10) damage.

Strategies

Bud'uh Boom can be compared to Grapeshot, Bombegranate and Teleportato Mine as they all function similiarly to Cherry Bomb - exploding in a 3x3 area, doing heavy damage; though with additional effects. While Bud'uh Boom is cheaper than all of them (except Teleportato Mine), he does less damage. This is not noticeable in a gamemode like Adventure, where most zombies are weaker, but in gamemodes like Arena and Penny's Pursuit there will be a noticeable difference.

Generally, Bud'uh Boom is quite good at crowd control. He can take out most weak zombies and leave the surviving ones stunned, giving you more time to deal with them. Sadly, his butter flinging abilities are not that useful at lower levels, since their locations are randomized (meaning they can easily land close to your house, rendering them useless if you have a good defense; and at level 1, only two are launched), and the butter puddles they leave behind don't last for long.

Bud'uh Boom is more useful in worlds that can support his butter tiles. Worlds like Pirate Seas and Big Wave Beach have water tiles that don't allow for butter to land or spawn on them, stripping Bud'uh Boom of his full potential. He, however, shines in worlds such as Modern Day where you can find large crowds of zombies with special abilities. Stunning these zombies with butter will hinder their special abilities, making the gameplay easier. He shines even more in Endless Zones, where, at later levels, very large zombie crowds spawn.

Unfortunately, there is not much purpose to using Bud'uh Boom as there are overall better options. When you compare him to Teleportato Mine, both explode in a 3x3 area and have a chance to affect other zombies in range. Bud'uh Boom launches two butter projectiles that leave zombie stunning puddles, while Teleportato Mine teleports three zombies directly to her location, which usually end up killing them instantly - simply taking out zombies usually gives more value than stunning them. Teleportato Mine also outclasses Bud'uh Boom in terms of recharge, damage and sun cost. Another plant that outclasses Bud'uh Boom is Chilly Pepper, who, despite having a smaller area to stun zombies, stuns them for more than double the time that Bud'uh Boom does, and is way more spammable.

Bud'uh Boom should NOT be used in Arena as he still penalizes the player for being destroyed. (This is likely unintentional and may be fixed in future updates.)

Trivia

• Bud'uh Boom is the fourth plant that butters zombies, the first being Kernel-pult, the second being Headbutter Lettuce, and the third being Buttercup. Out of the four buttering plants, Bud'uh Boom is the only instant-use plant and the only plant where its butter flings looks different.
• Zomboss's "You-can't-believe-it's-not-butter" in his Almanac may be a reference to "I can't believe it's not butter", a brand of margarine.
• Bud'uh Boom's projectiles and butter puddles cannot affect the following zombies: Dr. Zomboss, Barrel Roller Zombie's barrel, Zombie Medusa's statue, Swashbuckler Zombie and Relic Hunter Zombie when swinging, Prospector Zombie in the air, Imp variants in the air (thrown by Gargantuar variants), Zombie Parrot, Seagull Zombie, Pelican Zombie, Bug Zombie with its bug, Jetpack Zombie, Disco Jetpack Zombie, Blastronaut Zombie, Balloon Zombie with its balloon, Zombie Dove, Zomboni, and Zombie Bobsled Team. Zombies that are buttered, frozen, stunned or hypnotized cannot be affected, either.
