We all know Stinky the Snail, right?
Well, he's actually a crossover character from Insaniquarium. Anyone who grew up with PopCap's games (read: me) would be aware of this. And in that game, it does say his gender; he's a male. Here's proof, even, taken from the (super ded) Insaniquarium Wiki.
However, we don't use male pronouns for him. While it is never mentioned in the Plants vs. Zombies games themselves, it is mentioned across the PopCap-verse, and given there has been zero statement to say he is not a male in the Plants vs. Zombies series.
Counter-argument to those who claim that just because it's a cameo and he was male in the source, doesn't make him male in PvZ somehow: in almost any cameo, by default, genders will be retained. I mean, it's the exact same character, even. Unless it's blatant gender-switching for the sake of a joke, they'd have the same gender.
In the Mario Wiki, they have pages for characters who appear in Smash Bros., despite the fact they only have Mario in common. They still use proper pronouns and everything, too! Wikipedia will also use proper pronouns for crossover characters when discussing cameos. What makes us so different in that regard?
Counter-argument to those who claim that it's okay to refer to him with neutral pronouns due to the fact he's not a person: We do the same for zombies, and Snails also have biological genders, in a way.
Counter-argument to those who claim because of real snail biology: It's fiction and you shouldn't worry about it. Take it with PopCap and Insaniquarium's devs, not us, please. Please tell me you didn't google that, or at least have a valid reason of knowing that stuff, by the way.
Counter-argument to those who think there can be several Stinky the Snails: IIRC, the only reason we don't use plant genders is because of situations where there can be several of them, and genders only really exist when discussing a lone, individual plant. But you can never have multiple Stinky the Snails. While a multiple Stinky the Snail situation would be fun, we sadly will never have this in the future. Sorry, Toriel.
P.S. since I know this thread has a silly, almost jokey way of writing; i'm not joking about using the proper pronouns for stinky the snail. he has a canon pronoun, and even though it's not mentioned in PvZ, since he's a crossover character, and has a specified gender there, he should really count.
but stuff like "snailphobes", snail gods, and Toriel's disappointment are just there because... why not? if I'm gonna make another pronoun thread, i might as well have fun putting this humorous twist on with the tired idea for a vote. after all, it's a SNAIL pronoun. that sentence is already amusing!
