Heroes is simply dead, yeah, but at least it was killed off.
PvZ2 became a monster with all of those garbage plants and stuff being added. Let's recount everything they gave up on:
- Vasebreaker
- World expansions
- Original plants
- Sense of progression
- Balance (ever since leveling came out)
- Pinatas (As far as I know, they reuse the same ones constantly)
- Plant unlock epic quests
- Achievements
I'd rather have a dead game rather than a trainwreck of half-assed ideas.
Yeah but what you didn't mention was that dead game itself was also a trainwreck of half assed ideas. I know that PvZ 2 has become a cashgrab but it was PopCap's decision to go with EA and this was inevitable.
PvZH had problems with general game balance in terms of cards and the gem system, but apart from that, everything was going fine IMO.
The sequel on the other hand was much better up until Dark Ages and still has a certain charm to it if you're willing to look past the awful monetisation schemes.
I really don't get the heavy criticism of those worlds other than when I see bad players complain about PvZ 2 being too difficult when aside from specific bs levels it really isn't, in fact I'd say Dark Ages is one of the easier ones and personally I quite enjoyed PvZ 2 (before it got butchered with post Aloe updates) although Jurassic Marsh and Modern Day felt kinda rushed.
PvZ 2 was actually pretty good in f2p, I somewhat recently (few months ago) completed the whole game on version 5.0.1 without using any premiums and I don't remember using power ups either.
Even now while it attempts to shove p2w in your face they actually just made the game overly easy (leveling system, broken new plants, removing dynamic difficulty etc) and the only difficult thing is grinding for their crappy new content like mints, leveling and seedium plants.
If you wanna see real micro-transactions hell, just look at PvZ Adventures.
