Bamboo Spartan is a melee plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 10.6.1 update as part of the "Bamboo Spartan's Marchin'" Arena season. He does AOE melee attacks with a range of two tiles ahead of him, and deals massively increased damage to obstacles, instantly destroying critters. When his shield is destroyed, Bamboo Spartan's damage is boosted to 3x, which persists until he is destroyed.

Bamboo Spartan's damage multiplier affects the following targets: Tombstones, Barrel Roller Zombie's barrel, Pianist Zombie, Ice Blocks trapping plants and zombies, Arcade Zombie's arcade machine, Surfer Zombie's surfboard, Speakers, Tents, Octo Zombie's octopi, Imp Cannon, Zombie Hamsterballs, and Zcorpions.

In the Chinese version, his damage multiplier can also affect the following targets: Kongfu World weapon stands, Cavalry Zombie's lance, Bass Zombie’s speaker, Egg Stealer Imp and Egg Pusher Imp's eggs, Coal Miner Zombie's wheelbarrow, Steam Zombot's coal, Glider Zombie's glider, Renaissance Age statues, Renaissance Age Marble Mounds, and Guard Gargantuar's shield.

Origins

Bamboo Spartan is based on the bamboo, an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the subfamily Bambuseae of the grass family Poaceae.

As his name entails, Bamboo Spartan is also based on a Spartan soldier.

When given Plant Food, Bamboo Spartan slams his spear to knock back zombies 1 tile multiple times. He cannot knock back the following zombies: Gargantuar variants, Treasure Yeti, Dr. Zomboss, Cardio Zombie, Z-Mech, #caketank, Zcorpion Zombie, Roman Caesar Zombie, Imp Cannon, Jurassic Bully, Jurassic Rockpuncher, Mecha-Football Zombie, Disco-tron 3000, Jetpack Zombie, Bug Zombie, Balloon Zombie, Dodo Rider Zombie, Zombie Bull, Zombie King, Robo-Cone Zombie, Catapult Zombie, and Zomboni.

Spear-mint effect

When boosted by Spear-mint, Bamboo Spartan will deal an additional 100/120/160/200/240/280/320/360/400/500 damage with his normal attacks, and his Plant Food effect will attack 6 times.

Strategies

At first glance, Bamboo Spartan is very similar to Pokra, who costs just as much. Both specialize in CQC, and while he does not slow zombies, he is tougher with a damage multiplier applied to certain specific targets. As a matter of fact, he is twice as durable as the average plant at level 1, with a shield that can even resist one lethal strike. With the shield gone, Bamboo Spartan triples his damage.

Bamboo Spartan makes for a excellent plant in almost any world. Those reliant on grid objets or certain miscellaneous threats are rather easy to deal with. Though he can't deal with even a Buckethead alone and therefore is not self-sufficient as Pokra, it's relatively easy for him to lose the shield, after which his damage, combined with his rapid, ceaseless attacks, can decimate most zombies that walk into his attack range. If a second one comes along, most Gargantuars won't even be able to smash him, and in the case if he does have his shield, the extra time brought can make all the difference. Due to only dealing damage, he can also form exceptional synergies with other sources of support that either offer direct damage, crowd-control or both, such as the likes of Winter Melon/Pyre Vine. And since he has no projectiles at all, he is safe to use against Jesters.

The most glaring flaw of Bamboo Spartan, as with all melee plants, is the total inability to deal with ranged threats, most prominently Wizard Zombie and Fisherman Zombie, as well as Turquoise Skull Zombies or those that come behind him. This usually isn't a problem in itself due to the abundance of other plants that can handle it for him, but most types of support can take up additional room, and Bamboo Spartan often actually thrives in compact formations. His shield, while durable and can offer defense, prevents him from releasing his full potential as a melee attacker, not to mention it cannot be restored without removing him. His long cooldown also drags him down, making him difficult to replace in intense firefights.

Trivia

• Bamboo Spartan is currently the only bamboo plant in the International version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, but the fifth overall bamboo plant that has appeared in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a whole.
  • The previous four are Bamboo Shoot, Landlord Bamboo, Bamboo Bro, and Bamboo Trooper, all of whom are exclusive to the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2.
• Bamboo Spartan has the same eyes as Vamporcini, though colored green.
• He, Kiwibeast and Bean Sprout are the only plants to enhance/activate their abilities when taking a lot of damage.
